When going to uni, we often question whether it’s better to be single or in a relationship. No matter who you talk to, they’ll have an opinion on it, so we have decided to go head to head and weigh up the positives and negatives of both; while one of us is single, the other is in a long-distance relationship.

Which is better for your bank balance?

Having a boyfriend at University, especially a long-distance boyfriend, means that lots of money will be spent on travel and eating out when you see each other. Being single means that I only have to spend money on myself and, since being single, I have noticed that I have been able to budget things much more easily, with spare cash to spend on myself.

Although being in a long-term relationship is expensive, it’s so worth it. I spend a good portion of my money on travel and food when my boyfriend is here, but I would rather spend my money on that than on myself.

Which is better on a night out?

I genuinely believe that being single is better on a night out. While your friends with boyfriends might be crying over him, arguing with him, or leaving early to go home with him, you’re able to have fun with your friends, meet new people and possibly, or definitely, do some things that you will regret in the morning.

There is no difference between going on a night out single and going on a night out in a relationship, other than the fact your single friends are probably getting with someone which can be pretty annoying especially when everyone you’re with are on the pull. Nights out are even better when your partner is here, too, because you get to get drunk and dance with them all night.

Which is better when staying in?

Cosying up to watch a film with someone on a cold night hits differently when you’re in a relationship. When you’re not in a relationship, it can get pretty lonely, especially when all your housemates are with their boyfriends. But honestly, there’s nothing better than having a self-care night and focusing on yourself, as well as catching up on some uni work. So, being single when staying in can be fun. Plus, you get to pick the film.

When my boyfriend is here, there’s nothing better than a night in, especially after not having seen him for sometimes a month at a time. But when I’m staying in, and he’s not here, it can get lonely if I’m not with my friends.

Regardless of whether you’re taken or single, you can’t deny that there are plenty of pros and cons for both. If you are someone in a relationship dilemma, then there’s no need to worry, as both are just as fun as each other. Being single and being in a relationship can be fun in lots of ways, and both are equally valid as each other. So, no matter what you are, just make the most out of uni, and you’ll have no regrets!
