Get To Know… gal-dem

Launched in 2015, gal-dem is a print and online publication created entirely by women and non-binary people of colour. The idea of gal-dem was born when founder and Editor in Chief Liv Little was struck by the complete lack of diversity when studying the University of Bristol. The magazine aims to carve a space in the media to represent women and non-binary people of colour in all areas from politics to arts and music as well as fashion.

Your Instagram feed may have recently been flooded with images of the recent collaboration between gal-dem and The Guardian’s weekend magazine, as everyone took to the internet to celebrate the incredible work with snaps of the gorgeous pink cover starring Michaela Coel.

Since the launch in 2015, the fashion section of the gal-dem collective has done powerful work in holding fashion houses to account for cultural insensitivity and appropriation (turbans as fashion @Gucci? Really?), as well as celebrating diversity and history with a focus on young black labels, photographers and particular designers.

For the magazine’s third print copy (on sale 5th October), gal-dem has partnered with Glossier as the sole advertiser for the issue. Announcing the collaboration on Instagram, it was revealed that the cult beauty brand was curating adverts with particular inspiration being drawn from a famous line from Mean Girls (“That’s why her hair’s so big, it’s full of secrets”), to celebrate afro-hair.

Gal-dem’s 3rd print issue will be available from 5th October.
