Heterochrome’s ‘Melancholia’ is just that. A short, beautiful, and melancholic journey. The Tehran based band have produced an outstanding debut. The instrumentation is exceptional, Mida’s vocals a delight to listen to, and the production by the band and Danny Klaven Studios is next level.
Self-described by the band as “a short journey through the life and death, and through aggressive peaks and heavenly calm moments”, that description could not be more accurate. It’s the perfect album for reflection as the existentialism bears down at the end of the year.
And, at just over £5 on Bandcamp, a bargain to boot.

 

Last year’s debut EP from Sheffield Post-Rock trio May The Night Bless You With Heavenly Dreams throws out ‘Umami’ and ‘People Die’. As the first notes sounded I thought I was being eased into the morning with some soothing Indie Rock. What I got was the most exciting blend of styles I’ve heard in a long time. I have no idea how, but these lads have blended the typical sounds from genres as diverse as Indie, Alternative, Stoner Rock, and Death Metal. They’ve put it all together to make a hell of a debut. Each sound flows into the next and it all feels right.

It’s exciting, it’s unique, and it’s available for free on Bandcamp. Give them a few bob, and enjoy what will hopefully the first of many great releases.

Mohammed Maki’s Gothic influenced band Shivered delivers a dark, brooding album with ‘Journey to Fade’. Instrumentally, Shivered is consistently heavier, with crunching riffs, and slow, eerie melodies over the top. Maki’s soft vocals, however, are a soothing contrast. The album wouldn’t be out of place in a psychological thriller, and is itself an intense psychological journey (it’s also another album that’ll only set you back a few Pounds).
