Local Leeds: Turnstones @ Santiago Bar, 9/5/17

It’s a real privilege to witness a band’s debut show, and Leeds locals Turnstones made a bold impression as they supported Muffin at Santiago Bar.

The band take influence from the likes of Arctic Monkeys, The Jam, The Clash, Radiohead, Oasis and Blur. However, the four-piece have a clear cut sound that makes them really stand out. With tight guitar, sharp vocals and a highly uniform bass and drums, it was hard to believe that it was their first ever gig.

Consisting of University of Leeds students, the young band formed in 2016. However, a set that consisted of original songs showcased both the band’s lyrical and musical talent that would make you think they had been together for years. The lyrics are both poignant and memorable. In song ‘Go and Play’ the chorus of, “so take my hand life is what you make it/ make a stand otherwise you’ll waste it”, beckons you to sing along. In comparison tracks such as ‘Find a Way’ demonstrate a more powerful message: “So what can you do/For the world to idolise you?/Stuck under the golden lights and you’ll forget yourself/Never forget what you once stood for”

However, a song that really stood out and got everybody moving was ‘Keep the Faith’, with its punchy chorus and rock ‘n’ roll beat, it was one of those songs that remains in your head long after the final chord.

Turnstones proved they are a band to watch, and with such a successful first gig make sure to check them out via their Facebook page.
