Nothing But Thieves by Nothing But Thieves

Amongst the haze of hopeful musicians, Southend five-piece Nothing But Thieves have galloped into the forefront, gaining momentum at every pace.  Originally forming four years ago, the emergence of their first album is received by fans with overwhelming anticipation. Now finally available to our ears, it’s an unrelenting masterpiece.

Introductory song ‘Excuse Me’ offers a bold summary of what’s to follow, immediately plunging the listener to an ethereal dimension. This ghostly quirk stems from the distinctive and versatile vocals of lead-singer Conor that effortlessly bewitch. Best summarised by song ‘Graveyard Whistling’: “let it take you under, feel your worries disappear.”

Supernatural sounds are grounded by tales of debauchery; resurrecting the supressed teenage rebel within. The imagery and lyrics offer a sense of clarity in this album, emulating real-world experiences.  This acts as a stark reminder of the band member’s youth, making their musical handiwork even more commendable.

The collective sounds of this album strike an excellent balance between musical inspiration and individuality. Thrashing guitars and explosive drums add severity to heavier tracks including ‘Painkiller’ and ‘Itch’, whilst chilling melodies rule in others – particularly within ‘If I get High’ and ‘Tempt You’. No track is deadweight here, each with a distinctive character, uniting to form a sense of continuity throughout.

Ultimately, the debut is impressive from start to finish: it hypnotises, relates and inspires. As the dying lines of the final track fade away, you‘re left in no doubt that this can only be the beginning for Nothing But Thieves.
