UPDATE: Hyde Park man charged with murder of Leeds student

A Hyde Park man has been charged with the murder of Leeds University student Billy Mankelow.

Thirty-one-year-old Richard Danter, who lives on Queen’s Road, appeared in court today for a brief hearing. He will stand in Crown Court tomorrow.

He was remanded in custody following the fatal attack at the weekend.

Twenty-year-old social sciences undergraduate Billy was found under a railway arch in Swinegate near Leeds Station in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He later died in hospital from serious head injuries.

In a statement, Billy’s family said, ‘We are devastated by the tragic loss of our loving son Billy and are now asking for privacy at this heartbreaking time to allow our family to grieve’.

Police are appealing for information from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident.

Detective Inspector Mick Jackson from British Transport Police said, ‘I can confirm that the man found injured under a railway arch near Leeds station in the early hours of Saturday, 25 April, has since sadly died in hospital.’

‘We are still asking anyone who was near the railway arches in the Swinegate area in the early hour of Saturday morning and who may have witnessed anything suspicious to contact us on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting reference 47 of 25/04/2015.’

‘All calls will be treated with strict confidence. Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.’
