Preview – System presents Guti (live) and Nick Hoppner

The balloons from their 7th birthday celebrations have only just started to sag, but System have rebounded with two stellar lineups in quick succession at the Mint club: the huge Joy O and co night last weekend, and now two headliners who are sure to administer even more helium, so to speak.

They are two acts who specialise in eclecticism, having enveloped themselves in an unfathomably broad and rich world of sound. Argentine producer Guti will play a live set, drawing on his roots in the rather niche scene of Latin American jazz. Clearly a musician of immense natural talent, he rapidly made a name for himself on the South American house scene and beyond. He has since released music with the likes of Defected and Crosstown rebels, and received support from the world’s biggest house DJs. His hands on approach, and experience playing live rock and jazz music, should make it a uniquely engaging spectacle.

Few DJs could be as revered as Nick Hoppner is currently. His Berghain/Panorama residency gives him an almost saintly quality, but we must remember that it is his earthy, no nonsense, vinyl focussed selections that have played the main part in his beatification. With an image that probably resembles your dad, and a 80s electro and disco record collection to match, his set will have a classic sheen to it. But it won’t be without it’s postmodern touches as Hoppner has also become well versed in all things techno.

Annie Errez and Bobby O’Donnel will fuel the System fire as usual and round off what should be a diverse, dynamic night of radical house and techno.
