LACROSSE: Durham defeat tests experimental Leeds

For the final league game of the season, the Womens Lacrosse 1s entertained a strong-looking Durham team at Weetwood. With the match having been cancelled last week due to a frozen pitch, both teams were looking forward to having the game over and done with so they could focus on the upcoming cup and potential playoffs.

Both teams used the match to their advantage, Durham were able to try out some of the moves they had been working on, whilst the Gryphons were taking the opportunity to test out some of their defensive work; pushing up the pressure on the ball carrier with support on either side for example. Leeds were however hanging back and adopting a containing shape when they did not have possession however.

Communication between the Gryphons was sharp and clear all afternoon, and the excellent defensive play was twinned with some short, crisp passing in and around midfield. While Durham did have the overall edge, the home side did get some time in attack and scored an exquisite team goal from Georgie Single. Considering Durham’s keeper is an England international, Leeds were understandably delighted.

Although the final score of 20-1 to Durham was obviously disappointing for the Gryphons, Leeds came away with their heads held high. Durham are unbeaten in the league and are an extremely difficult team to beat. Bearing this in mind, this match and the scheduled friendly against Durham 2s next week should be sufficient preparation for Leeds’ time at the Nationals Tournament next weekend.
