Editors’ Choice w / 29th September

To give you a glimpse into the hearts and minds of your four favourite people at In The Middle, we the music editors have decided to lovingly curate our favourite tracks into weekly playlists. To kickstart this communal project, Emily autocratically presents you with her favourite finds from the past 7 days.

1.
Dean Blunt:
Trident
Black Metal

On 30th September, Dean Blunt unveiled the B –side to his upcoming album. A bleak yet mesmerising track, Trident was accompanied with a video which features footage of a crime scene which ominously cuts out as the music kicks in. The pounding drum track and piercing synths are unsettling but Dean Blunt’s arrangement of prosaic rap and soft, echoing harmonies are a beautiful paradox.  Inexplicable as ever, this is a bittersweet taster of what can be expected in Black Metal next month.

2.
Objekt: Ganzfeld
Hypnagogia

In the past few days, the internet has exploded with praise for Aphex Twin’s Syro. Whilst his status as an Electronica God is incontestable, it is important not to overlook other hugely talented artists – in this case, Berlin’s Objekt. Objekt  has had his finger on the pulse for a while now and his latest release with Dopplereffekt deserves serious commendation.  The production on his latest 12” is unreal – put aside 6 minutes of your day to just sit and listen.

3.
Chet Faker
: Back

Atmospheric and moody, Chet marks his return by dropping a tentative mixture of spacey synths, throbbing drums and – most strikingly – absolutely no vocals. A huge depart from his previous work on Talk Is Cheap, does this patchwork of drum-centric samples signal a new direction for the Australian? Back presents a whole host of exciting textures before fading into shimmering, poignant guitarwork only to be cut up by the harsh, crackling drum track. Like it or not, Chet Faker has made a huge statement.

4.
Les Sins: Why (feat. Nate Salman)
Michael

The latest single to drop from Les Sins (Toro Y Moi’s dance side-project) is Why. Unusually for Les Sins, the track is incredibly upbeat; a feel-good backdrop embellished with beautiful piano work. Why seems to epitomise summer as the last rays of sunshine slip through our fingers. No wonder this is on repeat.

5.
Finch: Anywhere But Here
Back To Oblivion

Many of us have a special place in our hearts for Finch – or maybe that’s just me. In fact, that’s a blatant lie, I have refused to acknowledge any of Finch’s latest material for the past 9 years but Back to Oblivion has finally won me over. The single from their latest album screams nostalgia but is driven by a fierce new energy that is fearless, unbounded and impossible to ignore.
