While Skipton’s Beacons Festival offers up some unbelievable disc jockying talent this year, it also provides a great lineup of bands old and new for you to enjoy. Here are a few that you need to see.

#1. The Fall

The Manchester band, fronted by controversial, misanthropic punk poet and occasional vocalist Mark E. Smith, have garnered one of the finest cult followings the world of music has ever seen. Go to their headline set and lose yourself in their aggressively repetitive northern noise.

#2. Fat White Family

While The Fall are sonically violent, this band will provide a singular visual encounter. If you make it to the barrier, expect to be sprayed by any number of bodily fluids. If you thought festivals were filthy, these communist boys are about to send them into to a Victorian level of infirmity.

#3. Pins

If it’s a bit of dark late afternoon punk that you are after then check out this all girl band who have made waves on the Manchester music scene for a good while now, and are now signed to Bella Union. Their set at Brudenell’s Gold Sounds festival in May was a raucous and racy affair that must have earned them a lot of (male) fans.

#4. Menace Beach

A cocktail of Leeds band members (from Hookworms, Sky Larkin and Pulled Apart By Horses) that is formed to soundtrack a 90s dream. Their obscure, floaty melodies should mellow you out in the sun. They have been regulars at Leeds venues over the past year.

#5. King Creosote

Tap into the Scottish folk tradition with this lord of alternative music festivals. Among a bunch of noisy punk acts, King Creosote – who has recently collaborated with Jon Hopkins (also playing) on the stellar album ‘Diamond Mine’ – will provide a more pastoral vibe.
