Sport | Sellars takes silver in Brasilia

University of Leeds sports scholar, Heather Sellars, claimed individual silver at the 12th University Triathlon Championships held in Brasilia on April 20.

Representing Great Britain and competing in her first international race, Heather joined over 50 athletes from twelve countries, facing the 29°C temperatures to finish in second place with a time of 2:16:31, closely behind Hungary’s Zsofia Kovacks (2:16:04).

Heather – who is currently studying Adult Nursing at the University of Leeds – was joined by fellow British athletes Lucy Smith and Jenny Manners, both from Loughborough University, to claim team silver in the event.

Reflecting on her success Heather said, “I was so happy to come away with silver in my first world international race. I knew it would be a tough competition, especially as I was up against women who had competed in the Olympics and the World Series events, so I was thrilled to cross the line in second place.”

The event saw athletes swim in the Paranoa Lake, cross the JK Bridge and race the streets of the Brazilian capital.

“The whole race was very challenging on the mind and the course itself was the most difficult one I have ever competed on. The cycle course took us up and down two huge hills, with the heat on top of it making it difficult. The run was over 10k and took place in direct sunlight.

“Thankfully before the event I had trained in the heat chamber at the University of Leeds, in conditions of 33°C and 70% humidity, which helped me acclimatise to a warmer and more humid climate. It was really helpful when I was racing.”

Heather’s plans for the rest of the season are not yet finalised, but the athlete is hoping to compete in some European and World Cup events, as well as some of the Elite British Super Series.

Recognising those who have supported her training over the past year, Heather said, “I would like to thank the University of Leeds sports scholarship programme and TASS for their support – without it I would find things very difficult!

“I would also like to thank my sponsors Leisure Lakes Bikes Bury, Red Venom, Amanzi Swimwear and, of course, my amazing coach Rob.”
