Sport | BUCs Preview

This week’s home BUCs fixtures see Hockey take precedence, as both Men’s and Women’s 1sts host sides that have started on top form this season.

For the Men, who face Durham 2nds, a victory may not be out of reach. Leeds sit in 2nd following two wins and two draws so far and, on the back of a strong away win against Newcastle last week, they have the chance to go to within one point of the league leaders.

On the other hand, the Women’s tie against Birmingham could be much more of an uphill battle.

Playing in the top Northern Division, Leeds have struggled during their first season in the top flight, managing just three points from their first four fixtures.

However the table as it stands is tight, and any result on Wednesday would see the gap narrow further.

In more dire straights, however, are the Women’s Football 1sts. Sitting four points adrift at the bottom of the Northern Premier, they face top-of-the-table Durham 1sts in a tie they are unlikely to be looking forward to.

Following two consecutive promotions, Leeds will have to defend strongly to come away from Weetwood with anything this week.

Despite also sitting on zero points, the Men’s Basketball 1sts should be more optimistic about their tie this week with Huddersfield in the Northern 2B. With a game in hand on their neighbours, and having suffered two extremely narrow defeats so far, Leeds will hope to capitalise on their game in hand to leap frog their opponents in the table.

Finally, the Women’s Volleyball offers up another clash with the team on top of the table, as Newcastle arrive at the Gryphon Centre this week.

The table is extremely tight however, and Leeds’ goal difference is such that, with a decent win, they could leapfrog Newcastle.
