This fixture always had the look of a one sided affair on paper, and that was transferred to the pitch in a match dominated by the Gryphons as they secured a routine 10-0 victory in the first round of the Northern Conference Cup.
The visitors seemed disorganised even before the game started; turning up about five minutes before the game was meant to commence, meaning a rushed warm up ensued.
Huddersfield normally ply their trade in the same league as Leeds 7s, and the gulf in class was apparent throughout. With Leeds being unbeaten in their first two games of the season confidence was high. Within the first six minutes they had already taken a four goal advantage with Lara Kennea making the score sheet and Kirsten Mckelly securing a brace.
Even with this lead they continued to press and had the ball constantly.By the time Emma Hilton made it five on sixteen minutes Huddersfield had not even had the ball in their opponents half.
The score could have already been in double figures, with penalty corners and other chances arising, with April Leeson causing all sorts of problems on the wing. Still, no answer came from the visitors and the onslaught was endless. Close to the half Prudence Robins eased past two defenders and added her name to the endless list of goal scorers. The half time interval couldn’t come quick enough for the visitors as they needed a break from defending their own goal.
They came out revitalised after the break and even managed to force the ball near the home side’s goal but there was no real danger. Leeds continued to fashion chances but the lead was not added to, even spicing things up on the many short corners they won, with many different routines being tried and tested.
This inventiveness paid off with Kirsten McKelly striking twice more to take her tally to four. The game was soon petering out as Leeds had all the possession as they had done all match.
Prudence Robins grabbed another before an unfortunate own goal brought the scoring into double figures. The trouncing had finished. A very solid display from the Gryphons, hopefully they can keep this unbeaten run going against Sheffield Hallam next time out.
