The word on the block…
Spoken Word Soc!
Here’s a shout out for the brand spanking new LUU Spoken Word Soc. We’re setting the stage this year for some slammin’ sounds, scribbles and general word foolery. Our first Open Mic night of the semester, early in October, was a blast, with so many people squeezed into LS6’s fairy-lit attic that we were all sitting cross-legged right at the poetry-popping performers’ feet. There was a wicked mix of sad, saucy, scathing and unanimously awesome acts, an enticingly eargasmic audience and plenty of beer to get those lyrical libidos leaping. Even after our President Mr. Jonny Walfisz flourished the mic a little too enthusiastically and we had to go the rest of the evening without speakers, voices rose to meet the challenge. Our upcoming Open Mic is on the 7th November, so come along to LS6 café and warm yourselves at our beat-tastic bonfire of word-wizardry! (Like our fb page: LUU Spoken Word Society for the event).
If an Open Mic night feels like launching you in at the deep end (although we’re super friendly, honest!) we also have our GIAG very soon. Come along and rediscover your rhythmic powers on the 12th November (see our LUU website for details). We’ll be holding a workshop and performance by an experienced and generally awesome spoken word artist and a relaxed GIAG Open Mic to round off the session. This will be a great opportunity to get to know the group and learn to shape your stanzas for a performance setting. We’ll also be taking trips and socials bound for various establishments where we will soak up the sounds of Leeds and revel in the splendour of alcohol.
Hope to see you all then!
