Wednesday’s game came as a shock for Leeds Uni Women’s Football 1sts when they took on Leeds Met at Bodington playing fields.
Uni were determined that the game would not be a repeat of Varsity’s head to head, three weeks ago, where Met took a 3-0 victory. However the game fell in Met’s favour once again, and Uni were left feeling rather stunned.
The game couldn’t have started worse for Uni as Met scored twice within the opening 3 minutes. Uni were left on the back foot as Met pressured hard and broke down the Uni defence taking every opportunity that came.
However, as Uni started to settle into the game, the tie balanced out significantly. Both teams struggled to take control over the other, and chances came in equal measure. Abbie McIver managed to pull one back for Uni and things appeared to look significantly positive from that point onwards. As the first half ended it appeared that this game was up for the taking for either side.
Despite a strong end to the first half for Uni, the situation went downhill dramatically as the second half began. Met scored three almost identical goals within five minutes of the restart. On each occasion Met caught the Uni defence on the back foot and managed to tap the ball home.
Frustration mounted for Uni after fighting back from the sloppy start in the first half but, despite numerous attempts on goal, Uni could not find the back of the Met net and the game finished 5-1 to the visitors.
It was a game that was much closer than the scoreline suggests but with basic mistakes letting Uni down. Hopefully the return fixture will Uni will earn a result that reflects how well-matched both teams are.
