This year, the coat is your statement piece. Forget patterned jeans, cobalt blue boots or that It bag, for the coming season it’s all about our trusty winter acquaintance, and in this case, the bolder the better. A new coat has always been one of autumn/winter’s big style investments, and 2013 is no exception. The good news? This season, cover-ups come in every shape and style, satisfying all wardrobe dilemmas for any occasion.
Designers such as Celine and Stella McCartney all made the coat the focal point of their catwalk collections, and from where we’re standing, anything goes. Fashioning big and bulging or sharply streamlined; boyfriend or elegant; richly coloured or pale and interesting, the high street has enough choice to fulfill all our winter requirements.
The Oversized
Cocoon, boyfriend, oversized, whatever you want to call it, as long as it’s big enough to fit at least two woolly jumpers underneath then it’s a must-have. Team with some of your more figure-hugging clothing or else you could look like you’ve dived into your dad’s wardrobe for the day – never a good look!
The Teddy coat
We daren’t think about how many teddies have been skinned in the making of these coats but when they feel that soft, we’re not too hung up about it. Think Audrey Hepburn’s furs but with a bit of ruggedness.

Add a big of edge and sophistication to your look. It’s still like our inter-seasonal favourite, the leather biker jacket, just with a bit more attitude and warmth.
The Sheepskin
Suitable for all country walks and the essential for fashioning the 60s aviator look. And if the sheep can pull it off then so can we!
The Colour Block
Winter warmers would be dull without that colour kick and in this case it’s in the shape of a coat. Think rich burgundies or bright mustards for autumnal style points.
The Parka
Perfect for keeping you dry during the storms, not so great when we hit -10 degrees. Invest in a trusty parka in neutral tones and it will forever be your fail-safe student necessity.

And finally, the Cape. Not ideal for snowy blizzards but still a chic alternative to the gilet. Pair with skinnies and boots for ultimate Parisian refinement.
