The Union’s events are failing to attract students as attendance levels plummet. Goosebumps, a new club night at LUU, has been cancelled while sports night Score closed early on Wednesday night.

The Facebook page for Goosebumps boasted of “2,000 raving pirates [coming] through the door” but the following week attendance figures had fallen to almost zero. The event, held on Thursdays in Stylus and Pulse, sold out for its Freshers’ Foam Party club launch on 26 September.

The week after, 4,000 free tickets were distributed prior to the event but only “around 30” people attended. One eyewitness spoke of the embarrassing turnout: “people just came and left”.

Free tickets, glow sticks and face paint was not enough to lure in the student crowds and the night was forced to close over two hours earlier than advertised.

The event, run by an external company, was cancelled this week although yesterday it was still being advertised in the Union building. The company were unavailable for comment.

New night Score is also struggling. Tickets were almost sold out for the Varsity after party but the night has since plummeted in popularity.

On Wednesday, one member of staff told LS that they were told to leave at quarter past twelve following low attendance. The Union’s Night Bus service also posted on Facebook: ‘Due to the Union building closing early, the last bus will be at one thirty’.

Activities Officer Greg Sturge, who developed Score, told LS: “we knew it was going to be quieter after Varsity”. He also said that the event management were currently talking to social secretaries of societies in order to secure attendees.
