In the spacious exhibition room of Leeds Gallery, a series of photographs hang along the walls, giving their viewers an exclusive view of what it is like touring with not one, but two of the most well-known rock bands in the music industry. Tony Woolliscroft has been touring with the Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers for 20 years, and this collection of photography captures the amazing moments experienced by both Woolliscroft and the bands themselves.

Ranging from black and white to full colour, close ups to wide shots, the photos are fantastic in encapsulating the spirit, madness and sheer fun that is obviously involved in touring and recording. Dave Grohl spits water at the camera and Anthony Kiedis throws his guitar across the stage; there are group huddles, jumps in the air, and plenty of face pulling.

What is wonderful is the way that Woolliscroft manages to time his shots perfectly: many of the black and white pieces are random, natural moments in which the emotions of each band member is conveyed through their relaxed smiles, wide eyes or excited grins. These contrast excellently with the photographs in colour, some of which get exclusive shots of the bands performing onstage. The camera captures the intense colour of the stage and lights, communicating the electricity of such an event.

Woolliscroft’s skill with a camera is remarkable; his photos evoke excitement and enthusiasm in any viewer, the raw emotion of the moments captured depicted brilliantly. If anything, there needs to be more of them! This exhibition is fantastic and should be seen by both music and photography fanatics alike.
