Member of hiking society dies on Cairngorms

A member of Leeds University Union’s Hiking Society has died during a hike on the Cairngorms in Scotland.

Five other society members from the same party have been airlifted to safety and are believed to be unharmed.

The alert was raised on Sunday at around 3pm, after one of the party fell. More than 100 rescuers were involved in the search for the party, who set off from Leeds at 5pm on Friday.

The Northern Constabulary has confirmed that the five were located on a hill near Carn Tarsuinn in the Cairngorms at around 12:10pm today.

Shortly afterwards the body of a male was recovered in the Jacob’s Ladder area of the Cairngorms.

Details of the identities of the hikers have not yet been released.
