All’s fine for RAG

The Library is to donate an entire week’s worth of fines to Raising And Giving (RAG), as part of the annual RAG Week fundraising celebration.

£14,000-worth of library fines have been added to RAG’s Community Fund, representing the average weekly haul of fines the library receives from students returning books, DVDs, and CDs late. Librarian Stella Butler said “The library is delighted to support the RAG community fund in this way.”

The Community Fund is RAG’s main resource for funding dozens of charities and organisations, both local and international. Money is contributed throughout the year from RAG’s various fundraising endeavours, with the most intense period of fundraising – RAG Week – beginning  this Monday.

The library has faced repeated criticism for the significant fines levied on students, who are currently forbidden from graduating until all fines are paid off.

Education Officer Josh Smith praised the Library’s decision to contribute to RAG, saying, “it is fantastic that the team has kindly agreed to donate such a large sum that will help so much with the great work that the Community Fund enables.”
