Wednesday saw a fantastic end to the semester for LUUWAFC as the 1s remained unbeaten and were placed at top of their league with a 13-0 win over Sheffield Hallam, with goals from McIver (4), Miller (4), Lipka (2), Costigan (2) and Stone (1).
Elsewhere the 2s gained an important 3 points with an 8-7 win over Sheffield Uni. Going into the game the 2s were hoping to emulate last week’s 8-1 win over Sheffield Hallam in the Conference Cup and seal a league win.
LUUWAFC were off to a shaky start as Sheffield Uni went strongly into the game and after four minutes scored the first goal of the match. Sheffield’s dominance continued for the next ten minutes with an excellent ball from midfield through to the Sheffield attack making the game 2-0. After going 2-0 down Leeds started to pick up the pace with fantastic play from attackers Cree and Glasspool who linked well together up front. After continued pressure from Leeds a goal finally arrived 30 minutes into the first half with a smooth pass from Cree into the pathway of Zerdazi who shot straight into the bottom corner. This goal was matched five minutes later with a headed shot from Cree, making the game 2-2.
Two minutes later pressure arrived in the form of a goal from Sheffield’s forward in the penalty area and shortly after two Sheffield counterattacks made the game 5-2 to Sheffield. Five minutes before the half time whistle a corner kick from Leeds midfielder Riddiford was calmly finished by midfielder Holmes and another excellent pass from midfielder Riddiford finished with a left footed shot from Glasspool, ending the first half 5-4 to Sheffield.
Going into the second half Leeds looked to maintain pressure on the Sheffield defence and did so with a fantastic headed goal from defender Pye who equalised with her first goal for LUUWAFC. Shortly after Sheffield stepped up to the pressure from Leeds with two goals in quick succession and made the game 7-5 to Sheffield.
Not wanting her first goal to be in vain defender Pye went up for a Leeds corner and created her second goal with another shot from inside the penalty area and ten minutes later midfielder Riddiford equalised for Leeds with an excellent shot from outside the box.
With the game at 7-7 the Leeds back four Griffiths, Downey, Pye and Nuttall were met with increased pressure from the Sheffield attack. However great play and pressure from Leeds going into the final ten minutes eventually lead to a Leeds goal from Cree, sealing the game 8-7 to Leeds.
At the end of the game Leeds captain Downey expressed her delight at the 8-7 win: ‘I couldn’t be more proud of the girls. We kept fighting and didn’t give up and this has paid off for us.’
