After the very successful Just A Little Carnival last summer, the Just A Little boys, Ollie, Sam and Alex, are back. This time, they have put their talent for throwing a hideously fun night into Just A Little New York City Disco at Full Circle. The lineup features some familiar Leeds faces (Aartekt, Death on the Balcony, Hamish Cole) alongside disco veterans Horse Meat Disco. Leeds Student’s Harry Davies caught up with Sam and Ollie last week to chat about what they’ve got planned…
LS: So guys, your last party brought the carnival to Leeds, can we expect anything different from Just A Little this time around?
Sam: It’s going to be totally different.
Ollie: Last time was the summer carnival feel. This time we’ve got the loft disco feeling, taking you back to the 1970s. Different vibe, same ethos.
Sam: The way we want to do it with JAL is that we want spend a just as much on the line up and we do on the production side of things. That’s décor, dancers, lighting, special effects, whatever it is.
Ollie: That was part of the reason the first night worked so well. Things like the graffiti and the break-dancers really set it off. These things are the types of things you don’t normally get in your average Leeds nightclub.
LS: What treats have you got in store for your guests?
Ollie: This time there’s gonna be all things disco, flashy dancefloors, cocktails flowing everywhere, lazers, cascades of disco balls, 360 degrees projections on the walls. Just everything is gonna be fully discofied til you can’t disco no more.
LS: Why the change of venue to Full Circle Warehouse from The Fav?
Sam: The Fav worked great for the first one, famous for its garden parties. There’s a lot of extra stuff Full Circle can give us this time. It feels like a 1970s New York loft, it’s a lot more intimate than The Faversham. We’re also going to be bolting on some little bits of pieces like marquees to the outside that will serve as a sort of Room 2 with a couple attractions going on in them as well.
LS: What inspired you to choose disco for this Just A Little?
Ollie: Disko Stew played at the carnival event, we were quite new to them and they absolutely smashed it. And the big house music hype has taken to the disco as a genre too. It seems perfectly natural to put on a disco event. We think this second time round should go as well as the first.
LS: How comes you chose this line up for the night?
Sam: Horse Meat have been on the scene for years, their night down in London is a ridiculously popular night and we just thought they’d be perfect for this. The ideal people to top the bill for us, they just know what they’re doing. We’ve got that side of things, but we’ve also got the new side of things with Death on the Balcony (is 2009 new? – genuine question) and Aartekt who are pushing this. House DJs and producers who are pushing this disco trend. So it’s really nice to have the purists and these up and coming guys who are pushing the scene
LS: What do you think Just A Little are going to be putting on next?
Sam: Still to be decided but we’re in the process of potentially doing something with a South American. We don’t want to give too much away just yet.
LS: Before I go, can you give us any disco ‘guilty pleasures’?
Ollie: My disco pleasure is probably the Chic ‘I Want You’ Todd Terje edit. Oh, and the Saturday Night Fever move – Ollie proceeded to give me a seated rendition of John Travolta’s hip to ceiling move.
Sam: I used to play a disco cd when I was younger I used to listen to in my room with The Bee Gees on it.
