Placard stunt gets graduate a job

A Leeds graduate has landed a job at one of the most competitive insurance companies in London, after
holding a placard advertising himself at Liverpool Street station.

Giles Metcalfe, who graduated from Leeds last year, attracted the attention of several employers in the busy concourse with a sign reading: “Leeds graduate looking for job in financial services.”

After giving out over 80 CVs to passers-by, Metcalfe received numerous offers for interviews, before successfully being hired by the investment arm of Legal & General.

Simon Ellis, managing director of the company, described the 23-year-old graduate’s stunt as a “unique way of making himself visible. We were impressed by his initiative, so we felt we should invite him to an interview.”

After obtaining a 2:1 in European Politics, Metcalfe approached multiple graduate recruitment schemes with little success. “I knew I had to do something to make myself stand out in a crowd in a tough employment environment.”

Since going to interview at Legal & General over the summer, Metcalfe has now begun his role as an Investment Communications Executive, at their City of London offices.
