When Karl Lagerfeld puts his hand to anything, it’s rarely anything less than a sure-fire hit. (How many of you are channelling the creepers trend he aroused for Autumn/ Winter 12, we beg to ask? Point made.) So, when he gets to work with Vogue-supremo Carine Roitfeld at his side, the results weren’t likely to have been anything but perfect. And that they were, with the current The Little Black Jacket exhibition, opened earlier this month at the London’s chic Saatchi Gallery.
Reading like a who’s-who of good taste, the exhibition shows Lagerfeld’s striking portraits, of over 100 celebrities sporting the timeless and classic black Chanel jacket. Along with the expected inclusions, such as Daphne Guinness, Alexa Chung and Anna Wintour, some surprise celebs were given the Lagerfeld nod, with hip-hop beau Kanye West appearing among the honoured. Lagerfeld seamlessly manages to capture each of the individuals’ personalities and taste, whilst maintaining a sense of unity throughout the entire collection (well practiced you could argue, with the number of faultless Chanel collections under his belt exceeding counting fingers). Georgia May Jagger oozes with sex appeal, Sarah Jessica Parker screams glamour, Claudia Schiffer looks naturally stunning, Edie Campbell works her boho beauty, and Wintour looks as coiffed and polished as ever… from behind. Roitfeld herself even gets a keepsake momento as she channels Coco Chanel in pearls and a hat, with Lagerfeld behind the lens getting her wolfish stare.
A truly brilliant exhibit with four rooms full of Chanel’s finest muses, the travelling exhibit continues through Moscow, Paris, Sydney and Berlin.
