The past two weekends have seen an excellent start to the season for korfball. At two freshers tournaments, Leeds’ new players (essentially beginners to the sport) have been instrumental in finishing in the top half.

 

At Lancaster the University’s teams finished 6th and 8th out of 16, also finishing an excellent 2nd out of 24 at Nottingham. Unfortunately the team lost a thrilling final match on penalties to Birmingham University, which came after losing their first match of the day to the same team 0-4. On top of these great tournament results, both the first and second teams have started their seasons, albeit in contrasting fashion.

 

The 2nd team, consisting of six new players and two experienced ones, suffered a tight 3-4 loss to Sheffield University in Yorkshire League 2, with two goals from Matt Norman and JP McNally-Reilly. The result was unfortunate as Leeds missed two penalties, which would have won the game, but the performance from new players was very encouraging.

 

The first team game, versus Castle in Central England Regional League 2, ended in an excellent result. With the scored tied 2-2 at half time, Leeds dominated the second half, and ended up winning 8-5, the goals coming from Sabine Schwab (4), Matt Evans (3) and JP McNally-Reilly.
