Hockey Round-up: Ladies Stick-ing together

LUUWHC put out a full house, this Halloween, with many teams playing universities in a much higher league they knew it would be a hard day for the club, however all teams worked well together and produced some promising results. LUUWHC 1st team came out on top, after playing Northumbria who currently stand at the top of the league, the girls knew this was going to be a tough game to win, but with excellent performances from Ali Stockdale, Louise Corkhill and Sophie Watkiss the girls gained a goal in the last few minutes of the game to secure a 2-1 win.

The second team revisited Sheffield Hallam, having played them the week before the seconds knew they had a hard game ahead of them. In the first few minutes of the game, Leeds had most of the possession, but after a quick breakaway from Hallam they scored an early goal. Leeds fought back to equalise with Kirsten McCulley scoring an excellent deflection. However they couldn’t hold onto to the draw and ended up losing 3-1 against a strong side. Bethan Watkins was man of the match, with excellent play in the centre, providing many opportunities for the forwards.

Hull, the only team to beat the thirds last season, this season’s thirds knew they were going to be worked hard. With a strong performance from all players, great tackles from the defence and movement from the forwards, Leeds lost 2-1. Man of the match was Laura for an amazing goal and movement up front.

The fourths hosted Huddersfield at Weetwood with an unbelievable win of 11-0. There were some cracking runs by Steph Plunkett down the line and crossings into the ‘D’ goals . With special mention to George Bojarski and Knebel for both scoring hat tricks.

The fifths came up against rivals Leeds Met seconds. With Leeds Met side leagues above, they knew it was going to be tough. The fifths gained the home advantage, the support was strong and the performance from the whole team was amazing meaning they only lost 3-0. Particular mention to Lauren Moore and Hannah Crane for their performance and team spirit.

The sixths entered this Wednesday undefeated, however the winning streak ended with a 1-0 loss against Sheffield who are top of the fourths league, though the sixths were proud of their performance and the final score. This week shows the typical strength of women’s hockey. The firsts remaining undefeated is a brilliant statistic to have and one they will hope to keep.
