LFW SS13: Topshop Unique

One of the most highly anticipated events of London Fashion Week, Topshop Unique’s show took place on day three, pertinently presented at the Topshop show space, complete with ingenious Topshop café and a sidewalk-clogging crowd outside. Under the creative direction of Kate Phelan, spring ’13 explored more feminine, grown-up looks while somehow maintaining the brand’s trademark androgynous-chic aesthetic.

Bypassing the realms of adolescence, the Unique girl modestly reinvented herself for spring, stocking her wardrobe with muted tones and hemlines barely grazing the knee. That said, she is still a Topshop girl — so, a bit of flesh was flashed, but in the form of carefully placed devoré, cutaway shoulders and asymmetric necklines rather than the more overt options. Storming the catwalk to Mimi Xu’s playlist, groomed and glossy models marched in black and white, midnight blue, and sunny shots of yellow. Silhouettes played with sporty-luxe shapes, with sheer panelling, one-shoulder dresses, and oversized straight-cut tunics. In terms of accessories, Unique’s stylist chose to play it cool, with origami clutches, demure silver earrings, and barely visible shoes. Jourdan Dunn and Cara Delevingne proved to be the main attractions on stage, while front-row fixtures Harley Viera-Newton, Pixie Geldof, Daisy Lowe, and Olivia Palermo were joined by relative fashion newbie Elle Fanning channelling school-girl chic. Hurry up Topshop stores, and provide us with the goods- we all want to be Unique girls too.
