Leeds Uni victory in Varsity rugby showdown

Yesterday’s Leeds Varsity reached an epic climax at Headingley Carnegie Stadium as Leeds Uni Rugby Union 1st XV stormed to a 27 – 11 victory over their Leeds Met counterparts.

In torrential rain rendering handling conditions near to impossible, Uni were well deserved winners in the closest Varsity competition ever. Pierce Phillips, Ben Holden and a penalty try scored for Uni whilst Joe Evans ran over for the Met.

Sixty-one games were due to be played, however the American Football match was cancelled.

At kick off, the collated scores of the days matches was 28-28 games each, with 4 results still to come in, including the Men’s Rugby game. At half time, this had been updated to 30-29 to the Met. This increased the atmosphere at the Carnegie stadium which had already surpassed fever-pitch.

The victory in the Rugby match resulted in Leeds Varsity 2012 being drawn 30-30, the first time in all 9 years of Varsity that Leeds Met have not won outright. Officially, Met will retain the trophy as they won the competition last year. However bragging rights will, for the first time, go to Uni.
