Every year on February 14th, the soppy Instagram posts and cringe-worthy captions inevitably start rolling in. Whether you’ve been single your whole life, or have only just gotten out of a relationship, Valentine’s Day can end up being a bitter holiday if not celebrated appropriately. So if you find yourself single on this cursed holiday, grab some chocolate, a bottle of wine, your best mates and put one of these films on.
Someone Great
If you’re recently single this Valentine’s Day, Someone Great is the perfect movie to nurse you through your heartache. Jenny has recently broken up with her boyfriend of nine years and enlists the help of her two best friends for one final crazy night out in New York before moving to San Francisco. With a banging soundtrack and genuine laugh out loud moments, Someone Great chronicles all the emotions that come with heartbreak, without overdoing the cliches. If you’re looking to both laugh and cry this Valentine’s Day, this film will no doubt tick all the boxes.
Legally Blonde
A classic of the 2000s, Legally Blonde is the epitome of a girl power film. Elle Woods is a sorority girl who follows her ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law School in the hopes of winning him back, only to instead discover her passion for law. Filled with iconic outfits and quotes (‘What, like it’s hard?’), Legally Blonde preaches that you don’t need a man or have to compromise your true self in order to be successful and happy; a message us singletons may need a little extra reminder of this time of year. Plus, it’ll teach you how to use Elle’s ‘Bend and Snap’ pickup move, guaranteeing you’ll have a date for next year.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
From the producers of Knocked Up and The 40-Year Old Virgin, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a comedy that remains funny no matter how many times you’ve already seen it. When Peter gets dumped by his girlfriend Sarah, he goes on holiday to Hawaii to try and move on. However, in a disastrous and hilarious turn of events, it turns out that Sarah is also vacationing at the same resort with her new rockstar boyfriend, Aldous Snow. Featuring a star-studded cast, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the perfect rom-com to watch this Valentine’s Day and remind yourself that at least you’re probably better off than Peter.
How to be Single
Slightly different from her breakout role in Fifty Shades, Dakota Johnson plays recently single Alice in this instant chick-flick classic. Alice temporarily breaks up with her boyfriend in order to *find herself* and ends up having a series of one night stands and short-term relationships that leave her feeling even more lost than before. How to be Single details Alice’s journey to finally realising that being single truly does allow for personal discovery and growth and that not always being in a relationship can actually be quite freeing (something important to remember on this godforsaken holiday).
22 Jump Street
If you’re looking to avoid romance completely this Valentine’s Day, then 22 Jump Street is the way to go. Starring your favourite buddy cop duo Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, the sequel to 21 Jump Street is filled with even bigger laughs and ridiculous gags. The most convincing love story in the film is undoubtedly between Tatum & Hill, whose on-screen chemistry and comedic timing is sure to cheer you up this Valentine’s.
