We all know that podcasting, or ‘audio-blogging’ as it used to be known as, is a booming and ever-growing media market. Podcasts have managed to squeeze into mainstream media, and it looks like there is no stopping the movement from growing. Celebrities and popular broadcasting networks are also along for the ride, as they expand their influence on the medium to attract more listeners, especially for younger audiences. Statistics have shown that there has been a significant increase of young adults, especially in the ages of 15-24, listening to podcasts every week.
Podcasts have been a central part of our culture, especially since the late 2010’s, as more people prefer to have on-demand entertainment; a service provided by companies like Netflix, as a substitute for television channels, or Spotify as a substitute for entertainment on the radio. Podcasts serve as free, on-demand audio, with people talking about an assortment of topics, which is perfect for the many interests of listeners who decided to tune into the audio. In a survey held by The Infinite Dial in 2017, it was revealed that many listeners seem to listen to podcasts on-the-go as they do other activities such as cleaning a room or using public transportation. These statistics are not surprising as podcasts have such a versatile nature. Some don’t require any active listening or attention, perfect for when you are hurrying to work, whereas some leave you feeling absolutely gripped and needing to listen to the next episode! As an extension of radio, podcasts have suited our society, as people have been able to integrate them seamlessly into part of their busy lives.
Podcasts also provide an intimacy with the listener that you don’t get from the general radio. Topics vary extensively, meaning you can find just the right one for the exact mood you are in. Subjects range from the likes of true crime, lifestyle, real world news and motivational. If you crave an in depth analysis on True Crime or just fancy listening to a girly gossip, the podcast has it all. With the rise of new podcast mediums, such as Pandora and Anchor, and programs such as Google’s Podcast Creator more people are encouraged to get involved; especially women and people of colour. Podcasts allow all voices to be heard, and create global and personal communities catered to your own interests.
