Here at the University of Leeds, we offer a wide and varied array of sports clubs and societies in which YOU could be a part of. With over 60+ clubs you won’t struggle to find one that you will love. So, what are you waiting for, join the 5000+ students that represent the University each week and become a Leeds Gryphon.
From Rugby to Netball and Football to Gymnastics, we offer many opportunities to take part in other sports which may be more unheard of such as Rifle, Skydiving, Windsurfing and Ultimate Frisbee.
We have 73 teams entered into BCUS leagues and 65 clubs which hold over 4000 members. This leaves us ranked as one of the top 15 sporting universities in the UK. As well as competitive sporting activities, the University of Leeds also offers social sport which is a great way to get involved and try something different with no weekly commitment required. As well as this social sport allows you to meet new people whilst staying fit at the same time.
2018-19 was a fantastic year for sports. Here are just some of our results:
- Mixed American Football 1st team placed 1st in Northern 2A.
- Women’s Netball 1st team placed 1st in the Northern 1A.
- Women’s Hockey 1st team placed 1st in the Northern 1A.
- Women’s Water Polo 1st team placed 1st in Northern 2B.
- Men’s Cricket 1st team placed 1st in the Northern 1A.
- Women’s Fencing 1st team placed 1st in Northern 1A.
- Men’s Futsal 1st team placed 1st in Northern 2A.
- Women’s Volleyball 1st team placed 1st in Northern 1A.
And if playing sport is not quite your thing and you would much rather prefer to be in the crowd watching; Leeds is home to many sporting successes.
Yorkshire County Cricket Club is one of the greatest clubs of all time. No other county has won more trophies or produced more players that have gone on to play internationally than Yorkshire C.C.C. Since their first title in 1893 they have won another 33. Yorkshire finished 3rd this season in Division One, behind Essex and second place Somerset. The team share the same home stadium as Leeds Rhinos in Headingly which is more commonly known as The Emerald Stadium. The ground also plays host to international cricket matches as well, with the most recent being the Ashes Test Match in which England welcomed Australia and the Fifth One Day International between England and Pakistan which was played back in May. In June and July of this year, the Emerald also staged four ICC World Cup Fixtures hosting Afghanistan, England, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies which was a great success as we saw England win their first-ever World Cup.
Leeds Rhinos compete in the Super League which is the top-level rugby league in England which they have won a record of eight times. They hit their peak in 2015 when completing the treble proving to be a fantastic season for them. Over the last couple years, the Rhinoshave struggled to retain their title, finishing 9th last year and currently sitting in 8th place this season with one game left to play. Leeds play at Headingley Stadium and their main local rivals are Bradford Bulls. Since the creation of the Super League, there has always been a large rivalry with St Helens who will finish this season victorious.
