“Thank you for coming to see us and not Wheatus.” These were the words of Still Corner’s Tessa Murray during their recent set at the Brudenell Social Club Community Room as their ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ counterparts performed in another room across the bar. While the sentiment was sincere, the dream pop duo, comprised of Tessa on vocals and Greg Hughes on guitar, put an admittedly very different show to the American rock group.

Still Corners, joined by a drummer, opened with the catchy and ethereal ‘Black Lagoon’. The performance was accompanied by a kaleidoscopic, ever-shifting projection of images and patterns on the wall behind them. The imagery complemented the dreamy atmosphere Still Corners created with their gossamer vocals and clean guitar stylings.

The group picked up the energy with their hit ‘Lost Boys’, leading the reserved crowd to let loose and start dancing. They artfully shifted between upbeat and slower songs, transitioning from the likes of the woozy ‘Cuckoo’ to the stirring ‘Beginning to Blue’. The duo ended their set with a rousing performance of fan favourite ‘The Trip’ that had the crowds dancing and chanting for an encore. The group came back for two more songs, but the ultimate highlight was that song.

While the whole experience was as dreamy and atmospheric as their music, it was also somewhat subdued. While the crowds were at times dancing, the majority of the audience seemed a bit lethargic, swaying from side to side woozily, albeit still captivated by the group. That being said, their live performance was incredibly impressive and their ability to create such an atmosphere is something unlike any band I’ve ever seen.
