Players Bar, a popular destination for students’ sports socials, is reportedly closing down this Sunday.
Situated opposite the McDonalds on Albion street, Players is notorious for its cheap Trebles drinks and £5 rounds.
The venue is a popular destination for Leeds Uni students looking for some 00s classics and cheap drinks. This news comes following the abrupt closure of Bavarian-themed Bierkeller, as well as Shooters Bar above it, last Friday.
Many Leeds students have taken to mourning Players Bar, after hearing of its apparent passing.
Sports Science student Charlie Whitfield stated that he will miss Players and will “Never forget all the nights [he doesn’t] remember there.”
Current reigning Gryphon Editor, Rob Cairns, mused: “I never went and I’m glad I won’t ever have the opportunity to do so ever again.”
Microbiology student Megan Ardis described the venue as “If Space, Pop World, and Pryzm combined all their worst parts into one.”
Going into further detail, she fondly recalled how it had the “Grime and sleaze of Space, ‘angry sports lads’ of Pryzm, and ‘everyone is so old’ feel of Popworld.”
However, Zahra Iqbal, an English-Literature student, will deeply miss the venue – one of her favourite nights out in Leeds: “I love a cheeky £5 round from Players… What about us who want to party in exam season?”
In a LeedsFess post announcing the closure, many of the 485 comments expressed their love for the bar.
Comments such as “At this point, I don’t even know if I’m gonna come back to Uni” and “I am utterly destroyed. Heartbroken. I will never be the same again” clearly show the special place Players holds in students’ hearts.
The Gryphon has reached out to Players Bar for further comment.
