Canal Mills, one of Leeds’ most beloved club venues, has announced that it will be remaining open to the students of Leeds until June 2019.
The news comes four months after the club announced that it would be closing its doors at the start of the New Year to make way for a property redevelopment of the Canal Mills Estate.
While the venue will still be making may for new housing at some point next year, negotiations between the directors of Canal Mills and their landlords have resulted in an extension to the lease at Canal Mills until June. The lease extension means Canal Mills can continue to entertain Leeds residents while landlords finalise plans for the redevelopment of the venue and its surrounding buildings.
Commenting on the extension of the lease, Mark Newton, Canal Mills’ director, said “we are really happy to announce this extension to the Canal Mills lease which will allow us to hold events in the space up until summer. We have some very special shows to announce alongside the return of the hugely successful Garden Parties which will take place on the May Bank Holiday weekends.
“We have been making progress with the opening of our new venue which will now happen in Autumn 2019, but our current landlords have been kind enough to extend our lease which will allow us to operate all our shows in the interim period.”
Canal Mills is still set to hold its hotly anticipated New Years Eve and New Years Day parties, which were originally advertised as the final events of the club’s lifetime and sold at prices which reflected this.
The club is yet to announce its lineups for next year, although a post on the Canal Mills Facebook page ended on a touching note, promising more information soon: “Thanks for all your support over the last few months and we can’t wait to reveal our plans for our forthcoming shows and new venue over the coming weeks.”
