Six years after their last album, 2012’s Rize of the Fenix, comedy rock duo Tenacious D are back with their fourth album Post-Apocalypto, an album that acts as a soundtrack to the band’s new animated web-series of the same name which was all illustrated by the band. For the 21-track effort, Jack Black and Kyle Gass enlisted the help of producer John Spiker, as well as additional drums from none other than Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.

The story of Post-Apocalypto “finds Tenacious D thrust into a world of complete and utter destruction following the drop of an atomic bomb. Surviving the attack in classic cinematic fashion (a good old imperishable 1950’s refrigerator), the duo quickly learns that new forms of evil have spawned from the blast. One thing becomes apparent — for humanity to prevail, Tenacious D must save the world.”

As this album is a soundtrack to the series, it’s perhaps the least musical album the band have produced to date, acting more as a pure comedy album more in the vein of the old Monty Python albums. However, this creates an issue for the album, as many of the skits and sketches need context within the series to make sense.

Despite this, the tracks are still hilarious, with Black’s ever-charismatic vocals and funny voices making each utterly absurd lyric seem somehow legitimate, which is the key to Tenacious D’s humour. This can be seen on standout tracks like ‘Making Love’ and ‘DADDY DING DONG’.

For an album that only clocks in at around 30 minutes, the band somehow manage to have a huge adventure through time and space. Whilst the album is fairly disjointed when not paired with the series, the album is undoubtedly funny.
