Although Saturday 29th September sadly saw fresher’s week come to a close, it ended with a bang at Mint Club, who hosted beloved local DJ, Nightmares on Wax, for their 20th Anniversary.
He gave us a set of traversing hip-hop, dub, soul and reggae for over three hours; with an expectedly huge turnout allowing the crowd to welcome him back to his home town of Leeds with warm, open arms.
As soon as the clock struck one, Nightmares on Wax, otherwise known as George Evelyn, immediately grasped the crowd’s full attention, radiating energy and passion as his set came to life. He certainly knew how to work a crowd of excitable students, performing his trademark sound through tracks from his newest album, Shape the Future. It had everyone grooving and vibing on the dance floor.
With the news that Mint Club will be closing its doors for good at the end of the year, it is of no surprise that they are trying to get the best DJs on the scene to play at the venue, and who better than Nightmares On Wax to help celebrate their 20th anniversary. The dark room, complimented perfectly with the eccentric flashing ceiling, created an intimate atmosphere comparable to a Hyde Park basement house party, with trippy visuals above and on the walls. Mint encapsulated an epic, energetic vibe between Evelyn and his crowd.
Ultimately, the strong electricity which vibrated between Evelyn and the feverish crowd just proves the success of the night, which left you walking away from the set still buzzing, sthe funky techno pulsing through your veins and resonating with you all the way back home. For Mint Club, this one will definitely be remembered.
