Have a latte on your mind? Never fear, international coffee day is today and it’s just what we’ve bean waiting for.

On the 1st October coffee events take place, celebrating the journey of coffee. This journey includes the production process and the men and women who make this happen, bringing the coffee from the farm to your local shop.

With the first official international coffee day being held only a few years ago on 1st October 2015 in Milan, these celebrations have certainly grown. In fact, last year they took place in over 45 different countries.

This day has come at the perfect time, with the autumn drinks menus being reinstated in our favourite coffee shops. One high street brand who are not taking this autumn season lightly is Starbucks. This year they have added new drinks to their already-popular autumn drinks menu, such as the Maple Latte, along with the regular revered drinks such as the holy grail Pumpkin Spice Latte.

This year, the International Coffee Organization has decided to add a very special theme to this event: ‘Women in Coffee’. With recent strides in gender equality it seems only fitting to highlight women’s efforts in the production of coffee and the importance of their role.

Want to join in and espresso how much coffee means to you? Even if your lectures don’t give you time to go to a local coffee event or pop-up, why not raise awareness by telling your friends and family about this day and the campaign behind it? And when you grab your daily coffee, why not post it on social media? Remember to use the hashtag #InternationalCoffeeDay and share how you’re spending the day.

So, when you’re rushing to your lecture on 1st October and grab that blessed £1 coffee from Essentials, take a moment to think about all the hard work that has gone into the coffee making process before you enjoy the ever-needed caffeine kick. I can guarantee you, these women aren’t your Average Joe.
