On the final Friday of term all roads led to Beaverworks, where Flux would again be hosting the most enticing final celebration of the semester. These tend to be extra special, and usually come with towering line-ups to match. In the past two years, these Christmas parties have seen Denis Sulta, Deetron and Levon Vincent shaped gifts arrive at Beaverworks. The quality of this year was of a similarly high standard, featuring Honey Dijon, Objekt, Peggy Gou and Harri & Domenic. The calibre of DJ was not only of high standard, but also brilliantly diverse in terms of age, gender, nationality, and genre..
On a night so bitterly cold, it took the ever reliable Wallauer to methodically warm up the main room with his typically carefully selected and efficiently mixed selections of rumbling, moody house and techno. This featured the likes of Hyenah’s groovy You Made Me Who I Am and ended with the rolling bass and powerful synths of Emu IV from Fort Romeau’s most recent release. His clever, understated set allowed Honey Dijon to burst from atmospheric moodiness into more energetic tech-house with Krusound’s Godiva, and into even more pumping grooves as the main room began to rock.
Meanwhile, in the basement, the unbelievably vogue Peggy Gou and her puerile cult following were on imperious form. For the best part of 2 hours, blasting the packed, sweaty basement with prime cuts of Chicago and Ravey NY House ending with acid classic Dream 17 by Annette.
What followed Peggy Gou, was the most unbelievable, blistering whirlwind of a DJ set by Objekt that pushed the limits of both the technology at his finger tips and the depth of his music knowledge. For the first hour, glitchy techno met clattering breakbeat at breakneck speed. It was impossible to tell when one song ended and the next began, even his hands which moved around his mixer and pair of CDJ’s with such speedy confidence gave no clues. As his set began to surge towards its business end, playing waves of jungle and ravey breakbeat anthems that included the classic Move My Body courtesy of Altern8; unlike anything ever heard at Flux before.
