Introducing five fabulous fashionistas: meet the fashion editors

Hello fellow fashionistas! Welcome to the fashion section of The Gryphon, where we discuss all things funky and fabulous. Despite the beginning of uni looming and that feeling of panic creeping in as we begin to realise what a good idea it would have been to actually have READ the reading list, we thought we’d give you the pleasure of getting to know us fashion editors a little better.

So… we cordially invite you to take a look at our fashion icons, our favourite trends and some of our most embarrassing fashion moments.

Lydia Varney: Print Editor

Why do you have a passion for fashion?

I love fashion like I love cheesecake; totally, irrationally and unconditionally. Love like that, it’s difficult to explain.

Who is your fashion icon and why?

I don’t have a single fashion icon, just like I don’t follow a single fashion look. One day I feel like dressing from the cast of Mean Girls, the next I’m slobbing in my Mom jeans. Although I do have a soft spot for basically everything Rachel wears in Friends

If you had to summarise your fashion sense in three words, what would they be?

Ethical, unpredictable, lazy.

What trend are you most excited about this season?

I am so excited for a bit of sparkle! I’m crazy about anything that shimmers, so the metallic, glittery tops and bursts of colour are right up my street.

What’s your biggest fashion regret?

My entire teenage years. Especially the horrifically short shorts I wore, obviously yet to learn that sometimes, less is more…

If you had to choose between Crocs or socks and sandals, which would it be?

No brainer! Socks and sandals. If we’re talking chunky, heeled sandals, I kinda like that look anyway!

Why do you have a passion for fashion?

I’ve always had a passion for it since day 1, loved accessorising and for me it’s a way to express your identity and personality across to the public!

Who is your fashion icon and why?

It’s got to be GiGi Hadid for me, her style just replicates and responds to Tommy Hilfiger and she expresses every part of their projected customer profile exactly. Fun, preppy yet smart and stylish, which is always fitting for whatever occasion.

If you had to summarise your fashion sense in three words, what would they be?

Branded, chic, sporty

What trend are you most excited about this season?

Athleisure is still a huge excitement for me, watching it grow and develop. I’m excited to see what is to come!

What’s your biggest fashion regret?

The pink chequered romper I enjoyed sporting along with some truly awful space buns when I was the ripe age of 6, shocking.

If you had to choose between Crocs or socks and sandals, which would it be?

Socks and sandals always, I feel crocs are a crime against humanity from all perspectives. Strongly.

Sara Al Humiri: Style Editor

Why do you have a passion for fashion?

This is definitely cliché but I’ve loved fashion ever since I was young. The idea of designing and communicating through clothes always fascinated me, that, and I’ve probably watched ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ one too many times.

Who is your fashion icon and why?

Elie Saab. He’s a Lebanese fashion designer who basically started from nothing; designing dresses on newspapers and using his sisters as models for his premature-ideas. I can relate to him because he really pursued his love for fashion despite what others thought and said. As a bonus we’re both Lebanese!

If you had to summarise your fashion sense in three words, what would they be?

Sassy, Soft & a bit Boujee.

What trends are you most excited about this season?

It’s difficult to pick one but I’d definitely say Silks, Ruffles and Slides.

What’s your biggest fashion regret?

Ever buying anything from ‘Limited Too’ (now known as Justice) and BHS’ ‘Tammy’. Those outfits were truly tragic.

If you had to choose between Crocs or socks and sandals, which would it be?

Gun to my head? Socks and sandals.

Stephanie Waring: Style Editor

Why do you have a passion for fashion?

Ever since I was young I’ve been interested in fashion because my mom was a fashion buyer, I love how you can have a different persona through every outfit you wear.

Who is your fashion icon and why?

I don’t think I have one specific person I look to as a fashion icon but instead its usually the people I see around me on the street as I like to take inspiration from everywhere.

If you had to summarise your fashion sense in three words, what would they be?

On trend, uncluttered, evolving

What trend are you most excited about this season?

This season I’m really excited for the scenic retro sweaters seen featured on the streets for some of LFW.

What’s your biggest fashion regret?

My biggest fashion regret would be buying lots of cheap impulsive buys instead of saving up for more expensive better quality items.

If you had to choose between Crocs or socks and sandals, which would it be?

Right now I would probably choose socks and sandals because earlier in the year it was a trend (according to Topshop!)

Darla Dryland: Online Editor

Why do you have a passion for fashion?

I think you can have a lot of fun with fashion. I see it as a way of showing different sides of my personality and trying out different personas, I try not to take it too seriously.

Who is your fashion icon and why?

Probably Iris Apfel. She’s an absolute queen. I’m determined to don feather boas, mahoosive glasses and all things weird and wonderful like she does when I’m a little old lady.

If you had to summarise your fashion sense in three words, what would they be?

Wild, wacky and probably slightly OTT.

What trend are you most excited about this season?

RUFFLES AND SPARKLES.

What’s your biggest fashion regret?

Hmm… probably when I tried to go through a ‘goth’ phase and started wearing my school trousers everywhere because they were the only black clothes I owned!

If you had to choose between Crocs or socks and sandals, which would it be?

I know it’s a crime, but I actually really love crocs!!
