At this year’s National Society Awards two societies from LUU took home trophies, with The Gryphon winning Best Media Society and Women in Leadership winning Best Campaigning Society.
This is the second year the national awards ceremony has taken place, and is an opportunity for the work of societies up and down the country to be celebrated and awarded.
This year’s event took place at Nottingham Student Union, with sponsorship from NUS and Red Oak Roller.
The Gryphon took home the Best Media Society award for improving the size of its readership, quality of content, financial stability and society sustainability.
Jessica Murray, Editor-in-Chief of The Gryphon said: “I am absolutely thrilled that The Gryphon has been awarded Best Media Society. This year the Gryphon team have worked hard to produce a publication that engages students and raises important issues, so I’m pleased that our hard work has been recognised.
In a time when print media is struggling, it’s great to see more students engaging with our stories, and being able to improve The Gryphon both financially and digitally will enable the newspaper to continue for years to come.”
The Women in Leadership society won the award for Best Campaigning society for their work on empowering women in the workplace.
Aimee Francis, President of the society, told The Gryphon: “As a new society we are thrilled to have received the best campaigning society award. The committee believes very strongly in the need for equality and diversity in the workplace.
The award recognised this and the way that we will only work with firms who follow our own values. Invisible barriers should not hold anyone back from achieving their potential. We want to build a strong, inclusive community which will empower our members, allowing them to support each other and learn from experiences.
In the future, we will continue to put on events that highlight the need for diversity and inclusion and help students of all genders be leaders. This will include an empower conference next February bringing together male and female speakers to discuss breaking the barriers.”
A number of other LUU societies were shortlisted for awards, including Women’s Hockey for Best Society, Vertical Fitness for Best Community Contribution and Ahlul Bayt Islamic society for Best Faith and Cultural Society.
