Over the past few weeks Black Honey have been teasing fans with pictures of them recording their highly anticipated debut album. On Thursday evening, they blessed us with not just one, but two new tracks as part of their Maida Vale session with Huw Stephens live on Radio One.
Despite only having released one EP and a small collection of singles, Black Honey have built up a huge energy of anticipation with their slick, cinematic tracks. Their brand new single, ‘Somebody Better’, opens with guitar feedback that perfectly encapsulates this air of excitement that is swelling around the Brighton four-piece at the moment. On ‘Cadillac’, the attitude and smooth seduction of front-woman Izzy B. Phillips’ vocals, together with instrumentation’s the desert sunset twang, oozes with originality, giving Black Honey’s music a never-been-done before quality.
Although it’s a B-side, ‘Cadillac’ struts with the pure quality of an A-side. The track radiates a smooth sophistication with Izzy’s seductive slurs, and perfectly embodies the sweltering bliss of Black Honey’s live performance. “Because it’s so wrong / But it’s so right” teases Phillips in a sultry bridge to the chorus, immersing you deeper into the irresistible world of Black Honey.
Meanwhile, ‘Somebody Better’ explodes with seering guitars and triumphant drums; an anthem that seems purpose-built for climbing on top of your friend’s shoulders at one of Black Honey’s many festival dates. The stripped back and atmospheric middle-8 allows for a breather, before building into a sweltering last chorus that will incite moshes left right and centre.
With these two absolute bangers, Black Honey prove that they’re overflowing with raw creativity and have endless tricks up their rolled-up sleeves. Their debut album is going to be huge.
