Deadlines are looming, meaning freedom awaits and there’s no better way to celebrate than relaxing into a theatre seat and enjoying a modern take on one of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays. The West Yorkshire Playhouse transports one of the most powerful love stories ever told to an epic northern landscape in their new production of Romeo and Juliet.
Teenage love and violence come to a climax as two star-crossed lovers from families in a long standing feud fall for each other with dangerous consequences. Their forbidden love stands as strong as their parents’ hate.
Amy Leach directs this new production, and her new staging urges reflections on how we live together today; particularly in light of the UK exiting the European Union. Leach says: “Romeo and Juliet is a play about the division between two families and asks us all how we define and divide ourselves both in this city, the country and the world. I am thrilled to be creating a fresh, visceral and emotional Romeo and Juliet for this time and place.”
Romeo will be played by Dan Parr, known for his theatre work in: The Kitchen Sink, New Vic Theatre; Hamlet, Barbican; and Kes, West Yorkshire Playhouse. Tessa Parr will star as his lover Juliet and she’s previously shone in: Playdough, Unlimited Theatre; The Soaking of Vera Shrimp, Live Theatre; and Wizard of Oz, Northern Stage.
The play is running in the Quarry Theatre at the West Yorkshire Playhouse from 3rd March- 25th March 2017 and is set to be an outstanding modern adaptation of a classic.
