If you’ve seen the little pink crocodile posters cropping up around Leeds recently you might know that Kontra is hosting a funky little night at Musiquarium tonight. But if you’re out of the loop and need a bit of background information; Kontra is a collective that has previously hosted the successful Groove Mood at Hyde Park Book Club, and will, this time, be bringing together a collection of DJs to provide the best deep house, disco and electronic on a February Friday evening.
The selection of DJ’s is effortlessly cool and beautifully varied. Leeds very own Edimi will open the evening with what is set to be a vibey house set with the potential for electronic undertones. Kontra DJ’s will be following this up with the likelihood of some funk and disco to keep the night going and get the groove started. This combined with a bit of Valby Rotary and the more intense, driving sounds of Jeigo to close the evening will round off what is expected to be a gem of a night.
What’s more is that every penny made by the event is for local charity, Basis. Basis is a charity centred on supporting women in Leeds who have experienced sexual exploitation as a child, women and transgender women working in the sex industry in Leeds and young women at risk of sexual exploitation also. The charity carries out essential work providing safety, information and support for women and young people who are most at risk. It’s a charity that fights for the rights of women, standing up to discrimination and violence.
So with proceeds going to a vital charity, and a line-up promising to provide, as well as the setting of the hidden away Musiquarium, with its fairy-lit smoking area and UV lighting, why not get a last minute ticket for a good cause?
