Another Friday rolls around and with it comes another Flux to get people talking. But this time was different. Flux has turned six years old and rightly put on a huge birthday party to celebrate. Those who are massively out of the loop might be asking how an event has lasted so long with such loyal followers, managing to sell out every time and keep people coming back for more…The answer is by providing that diversity and atmosphere that make the event so good.
First they brought the techno; Benjamin Damage held an impressive set with thumping beats and a hypnotic, driving sound. This was perfectly backdropped by the UV lights and low ceiling of the Basement and classics such as ‘010x‘ and ‘Creeper‘ appealed brilliantly to techno-hungry crowds. Justin Carter of Mister Saturday Night similarly provided heavy baselines in the Red Room but mixed it up with allusions to disco, ending things on a funky note. Notable also was Flux resident Wallauer, who set off the Red Room at the beginning of the night with a melodic range of techno and funky amalgamation of genres that set the tone for the evening.
Differently to the sounds coming from the Basement and Red Room were the throwback classics flying out of the Warehouse and Bar. Reuben went down the route of some audacious disco, and the crowd found themselves hands in the air belting out ‘Voulez-Vous’, tears brimming in their eyes at the emotional moment. Whilst on a lone trip to bar, arguably the best song of all time (according to me) Jermaine Stewart’s ‘We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off’ graced the speakers. Despite my lack of friends at this point the necessity to boogie overcame me. That’s the magic of a Flux throwback. Finishing off the Warehouse was Love Muscle head honcho Michael Upson, whose funky remix of ‘The First Time‘ was a memorable round off to the night.
This standout birthday celebration showed that Flux did it again and will keep doing it again. Next up, their Day and Night Party comes to Beaver Works on 22nd April.
