Bastille @ First Direct Arena, 4/11/16

Fun fact- the University of Leeds’ extensive alumni includes Dan and Kyle of Bastille. There was a small part of me hoping they’d surprise us at Freshers… No such luck. However, catching them in all their glory at First Direct Arena proved ample consolation, certainly a night to remember!

Support acts Leah Dou and Rationale brought culture and energy to the stage in contrasting ways. Rationale was a support act worth his weight in gold; his stage presence was out of this world and I recommend you check out ‘Something for Nothing’.

As soon as Bastille came on, cheers exploded from every direction. They played a mix of songs from Wild World and Bad Blood; ‘Glory’ live was stunning, with the strings adding a haunting, effortless element which captivated the audience. I didn’t expect them to play ‘The Draw’ but boys… what a great decision!

Two highlights though. ‘Oblivion’ brought about such a gentle air to the room; with the lights dimmed, audiences lit up the darkness with phone screens creating such a beautiful atmosphere – perfect for the melody and Dan’s peaceful voice. Secondly, my friend oh-so-kindly lifted me onto her shoulders for ‘Weight of Living pt. 2’, a moment hard to recall without getting all giddy and emotional.

Check out Wild World now, and let’s hope they grace us with their presence again very soon!
