Clad in our neon jumpsuits, velvet, glitter and with one pal essentially sprayed gold and equipped with matching golden disco ball sunglasses- we made our way to Canal Mills last Saturday night.

Possibly only one particular genre of music calls for the outright need for such an ensemble, Discopolis was a surprisingly sweet treat for Halloween weekend. Already enticed by the line-up of DJ Harvey, Leon Vynehall, Job Jobse and Palms Trax we were all expecting a night of grooving until the small hours. It was an interesting mix up especially considering that aside from Palms Trax these artists aren’t particularly known for disco themed playlists. Yet we were not to be disappointed.

Palms Trax took up residence in room 2, spinning an impressive four hour vinyl set of classic disco and deep house (with what looked like only a packet of crisps on offer to keep him going). One especially memorable song was Jerome Sydenham’s mix of The System- You’re in My System (what an invaluable tool is the Shazam app!) which had the entire room up and moving. Meanwhile Leon Vynehall diversified out into acid house and deep house, bringing an upbeat contemporary twist to the classic 70s and 80s sound.

On entering the venue the crowd was immediately graced by the presence of huge glittering ball which lit up the main room and stage with shimmering beams; Red Bull certainly did well with the décor by piling up glowing rubix cube structures around the decks accompanied by their classic blue and white banner. But as always, the creative blend of artists and music took precedence. The night was part of the RBMA series of events which took place across the UK this October and included live sessions, lectures, art installations and seminal club nights all with the mission to “celebrate and educate within music”.

One thing that Discopolis certainly made clear – Disco reigns supreme.
