Australian Pink Floyd @ First Direct, 28/10/16

Australian Pink Floyd are something of an oddity in the world of tribute acts. They don’t play pubs, they don’t have a jokey name, and they don’t sound crap. Instead, they opt to play arenas, take themselves seriously and sound phenomenal. With a reputation as good at theirs, I was eager to see them for myself.

It was made very clear very quickly that they’re are nothing short of spectacular. It was particularly endearing to see the respect the band held for the songs. Wearing all black, and ditching any attempt of showmanship, the songs were always left to do the talking. With songs like ‘Time’ are on the set list it’s easy to see why.

The career-spanning set was separated into two halves by a short break; probably so the ageing audience could go to the toilet. The first half was heavy on the hits, as ballads like ‘Us and Them’ and ‘Shine on You Crazy Diamond’ were played. The vocals on ‘Great Gig in the Sky’ were stunning and made it the pinnacle of the first half.

The second half was home to a few obscurities. The audience reacted slightly less to tunes like ‘The Fletcher Memorial Home’, but nevertheless they were still perfectly executed. ‘Comfortably Numb’ was by far the jewel in the crown of the night; that guitar solo live is unforgettable.

An element of fun was added to proceedings as videos of Donald Trump were played on a big screen whilst ‘Brain Damage’ was played. A giant inflatable teacher was erected for ‘Another Brick in the Wall Part Two’ which was also a laugh. The Aussies put on a magnificent tribute to one of the world’s finest bands, and I would happily pay £30 to see it all over again.
