Spring King @ The Wardrobe, 16/10/16

It’s rare to find a gig where you’re as enthusiastic about seeing the support acts as you are the headliner, but the combination of Get Inuit, The Magic Gang and Spring King ensured The Wardrobe was almost full to capacity with fans anxious to see all three.

Get Inuit, a four piece ‘dirty pop’ band from Kent, graced the stage with a youthful energy and catchy songs like Teriyaki’ and ‘Middle Class’, setting the tone for what was to be a sweaty Sunday night. Then came one of 2016’s most talked about bands ‘The Magic Gang’, an indie four piece based in Brighton. Judging by band t-shirts in the crowd there were already some fans present, but it only took one verse of ‘All This Way’ for the rest of the audience to be converted.

The enthusiasm reverberating around the room made it clear excitement for the main act was growing. Front man Tarek Musa and co were greeted by shouts and screams after asking “are you ready to lose your shit on a Sunday?”. They dived straight into the tracks from their debut album ‘Tell Me If You Like To’, most of which the crowd relayed back word for word. Starting with the pop-rock songs ‘Detroit’ and ‘Rectifier’, they sporadically changed pace to ‘They’re Coming After You’ and then got into ‘Mumma’, a crowd pleaser and the band’s’ earliest release back in 2014.

After an intense and sweaty set, many times during which fans crowd surfed and had to be fished out of a sea of vans, docs and converse, Spring King declared it “the best fucking night of the show”. They walked off to ‘Three Little Birds’, an amusing change of tone and potential tactic by the venue to calm down energised mobs of teenagers before releasing them onto the streets of Leeds. Crowds around the merchandise stands showed people evidently wanted others to know they listened to these bands, a mark of respect any artist could hope for, and with all of them noted as promising talents in 2016 I hope all three return to Leeds soon.
