The University of Leeds has been awarded University of the Year by The Times and The Sunday Times‘ Good University Guide.
Student satisfaction at Leeds was foremost in tipping the decision in the university’s favour. Editor of the guide, Alastair McCall, commented that Leeds ‘thoroughly deserves our University of the Year for prioritising students’ needs first to last.
‘Outstanding student satisfaction levels do not happen by accident and reflect the emphasis placed here on getting the student learning experience spot on.
‘Heavy investment in campus facilities has gone hand in hand with a strong pastoral system of student support, and the Leeds for Life scheme that helps prepare students for life after university.
‘It is no wonder that Leeds’ graduates are so sought after by employers.’
Recently the University managed to retain its 90% student satisfaction rating in the National Student Survey and remained in the top 100 in The Guardian‘s university rankings at 93rd.
Vice-Chancellor, Sir Andrew Langland, said: ‘The announcement comes at a significant point in the calendar, as we welcome 11,000 new colleagues and students to campus for the start of the academic year.
‘We have been supported by unparalleled investments in our staff, research capability and campus, which makes Leeds a truly remarkable place when it comes to inspiring knowledge and creating opportunity.
‘We are investing in future generations of independent, critical thinkers and cutting edge research of real impact and significance.’
Leeds’ recent investment into the campus impressed the awarding committee. The £520 million campus development programme has included last year’s completion of the £26m Laidlaw library, this year’s refurbishment of the Edward Boyle Library and the revamp of the Student Union.
Leeds has been runner up for the award in the last two years. This, combined with its improved rankings, impressive student-focused outlook and refurbishments meant that Leeds deserved the top spot. And with more improvements across campus still yet to be revealed, the University of Leeds is already making moves to maintain their outstanding record for next year.
