Where to get outside this spring (other than Hyde Park)

Roundhay Park

Roundhay Park should definitely be your number one priority this spring for a day out. It is one of the biggest and most popular parks in Europe, and for good reason. When the sun comes out it’s stunning, and with a variety of different flower gardens and woodland areas to walk through you won’t get bored. The lake is the perfect place for a stroll, or even a run (for those of you who are still successfully keeping up your New Years’ fitness resolutions). You’ll encounter all sorts of wildlife, including deer, woodpeckers and swans (far more exciting than the crows in Hyde Park). It’s hard to believe that this oasis is less than half an hour away on the bus from the centre of miserable, grey Leeds.

How to get there:

No. 12 bus from the city centre to Roundhay Park or a mere 15mins drive.

Harrogate

Harrogate has been named the happiest place to live in the UK, so why would you not want to venture out of Leeds to this idyllic town. You can take your pick from going on a walk, seeing the natural springs or wandering through the old market town, stopping to have a delicious meal or drink in one of the many restaurants and pubs. Harrogate is ideal for everyone, whether you want to treat your other half to a romantic day out or explore somewhere new with friends.

How to get there:

Bus – No. 36 towards Ripon from Leeds Bus Station

Train – 35mins from Leeds Train Station, £8 return (with a railcard)

Ilkley

I know we’ve probably all already been to Ilkley, but that’s no reason not to have it on this list. The moors at this time of year are simply breathtaking. After scrambling through the bracken up the hill, it is time, of course, to take the obligatory photo on top of the Cow and Calfs rocks. Though instead of just heading straight down to the pub (which I avoid every time now after an unpleasant encounter with some very rude staff) continue walking along the moors. You’ll come across a lovely river and some more peaceful places to have a packed lunch (if you can brave the wind that is).

How to get there:

Just 30mins on the train from Leeds Train Station, £4 return (with a railcard)

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

For those of you who fancy getting out of Leeds and need some culture in your life then the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is the place for you. You can find exhibitions both indoors and outdoors, with as many as 100 sculptures spread around the gorgeous estate.

How to get there:

Driving, it’s only 30mins away, unfortunately it is neither easy nor cheap to get there by public transport, so I’d recommend persuading a friend with a car to drive you. I’m sure they’ll be grateful you dragged them there as soon as they arrive.
